Bertha Carey

Bertha Martin Carey was born June 7, 1913 in Sprotts,Alabama The daughter of the late Jim and Estella Young Martin. She moved with her family to West Virginia at the age of Three. Bertha Transitioned this life Sunday September 6th at C.A.M.C. General Division. She was a Beloved resident at the Dunbar Care-Genesis Long Term Care Facility. She was also preceded in death by her Husband Wilber C Carey SR, a son Henry F Carey six brothers Willie, Jeff, Memphis, O.D., James and Ernest  five sisters Cornelia Perry, Pearl Stinson, Clemistine Glenn and Addie Ward. Bertha was a Long Time Member of the Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church in Holden serving as Mother of the Church for many years and faithful choir member. She was a retired Commercial cook and domestic worker. A Aracoma High School Graduate where she was Inducted into the Aracoma High School's Sports Hall of Fame as a Cheerleader, Member of the Federated Woman's Club of Logan, Daughter of Isis Lodge and Past President of West Virginia's Chapter of the Martin Family Reunion. Bertha enjoyed Cooking, Sewing and reading her Bible. She was often asked by family members the secret to her good cooking. Bertha loved to dance and won many dance contests. she said her father said to her one day " if anything will keep you out of heaven; it would be your dancing. Thank God for Salvation Survivors left to cherish her memory include Three Loving Daughters Mrs June L Parker of Columbus,OH, Mrs Donna Jean McCoy of Huntington,WV and Ms Malva J Carey of Institute WV  Four Loving sons Wilber C Carey Jr of Odenton, MD, Joseph C Carey of Merced, CA, Elbert James Carey of Detroit, MI and Albert Martin Carey of Merced CA. Two Sisters Jamie Martin Lewis of Detroit, MI and Mahalley Martin Dobyne of Columbus, OH 15 Grandchildren 16 Great Grandchildren and 10 Great Great Grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews Cousins other relatives and Friends Her special care Giver Dorietta Hairston and the Caring Staff at Dunbar Care Center.  Services will be Tuesday September 15th at 1 PM at the Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church in Holden with Rev Michael Pollard Officiating. Friends may call 1 hour Prior to services at the Church.  Collins Funeral Home Switzer is in charge. Condolences may be left at www.collinsfuneralhomewv.com
