Donald H. Elkins, 72, of Switzer, passed away June 29, 2019 at Logan Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness.
He was an active member of New Life Freewill Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Jonah and Marie Hughes Elkins and one grandson, Timothy Elkins, II.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 50 years, Lana Sue Ferguson; one son, Tim (Melanie) Elkins of Omar, and one daughter, Tammy (Ray) Albright of Logan; 2 brothers, Jack (Iris) Elkins of North Carolina, Jonah Elkins Jr (Norma) of Micco, and 3 sisters, Jonetta (Wayne) Barnette of Tenn., Debra (James) Jeffers of Micco, and Dianna (Stan) Gambrel of Kentucky. Don had 3 grandchildren that he loved dearly, Larra Dawn Elkins, Emma Marie Elkins, and Charlie Sue Albright; a special, long time friend, Mike Veres, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Don loved many things in life. He spent several years running the horse stables at the park where he took people out on trails and wagon rides. Many will remember his time spent coaching on the ballfields, whether it be midget league football or little league baseball. He enjoyed working with the youth, teaching them more than just sports. He was a friend and mentor to them, and touched far more lives than he ever knew. Above all, and beyond measure, he loved his family, whom he was always there, day or night.
Services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at New Life Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Alvis Porter officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 6-9pm.
Pallbearers will be Tim Elkins, J.D. Vinson, Mark Hatcher, Ray Albright, Jack and Jason Elkins.
